J David Osborne is the author of eight books, four of which are currently in print. His debut novel, By the Time We Leave Here, We’ll Be Friends, won the 2010 Wonderland Award for Best Novel. He took a long break from writing (almost ten years), but has been inspired by cool shit lately, and has decided to get back to it. It’s going well so far.
He has worked as a hot dog salesman, tree trimmer, furniture deliverer, grocery store checker, freelance editor, and high school teacher. He currently works in sales (not hot dog sales).
In 2013, he launched Broken River Books, a small press for weird fiction. Over the course of its run, the press developed a distinct aesthetic and published authors like Stephen Graham Jones, William Boyle, and Gabino Iglesias.
In 2021, he closed the press and reimagined it as a collective. Broken River Books is made up of JDO, Kelby Losack, David Simmons, Grant Wamack, e rathke, and Rios de la Luz. Each author has full control of their work, with the banner of Broken River serving to unite them all in an effort to achieve success for all.
JDO is also the co-host of the Agitator podcast, a weekly show with his friend Kelby Losack. Though it started as an exploration of the films of Takashi Miike, it became a powerful lo-fi drama about two guys going from poverty to something approaching stability. Now they just talk shit once a week. It’s funny, and it gets them in hot water occasionally.
JDO lives in Oklahoma City with his wife and son. He likes action movies, anime, and roguelike video games.
